The Wieden Mine - Bergwerk Finstergrund.

Take a trip underground and back in time to see how local men worked in years gone by. Mining has taken place in Wieden from the 13th Century until 1972. Initially mining for silver and for lead ore, later the miners turned to mining for fluoride at the start of the 20th Century. From 1920 to 1972 some 20km of tunnels were excavated over a vertical distance of 360metres. The mine opened to vistors in 1982 and experienced guides, mostly form,er miners, guide your walk down 2km of the galleries.

And when you find it so much colder underground than in the warm summer air, you will maybe get an idea of the hardship endured by these hardy workers.

Open Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday from May to October.

The nearby mine in Munstertal is also wellworth a visit.
